Winter Break Play Ideas Around Orange County
Winter break play ideas for when you might have a little extra time to explore our local area, as well as, day trips to LA or San Diego.
This list is really WAY more than 15+ options because many of them hold lists of their own with 5, 7, and 17 options. So, really, there are endless options and combinations!
Take a local train trip!
This blog post walks you through trips to popular destinations like San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente (service may be impacted by closures), Fullerton, City of Orange, and Anaheim.
Visit El Dorado Nature Center on an island
El Dorado Nature Center is right across the Orange County line in Long Beach. It's a beautiful, expansive park with some fun playgrounds. However, try starting at the Nature Center to take an easy family hike and feel immersed in nature. Closed Mondays. Parking fee.
Play at Heritage Park Play Island in Cerritos
This is another one on the northern border of OC, but it's worth the trek. The exploration alone is super fun for kids because it feels like there are secret passageways and surprises at every turn. Look for turtles in the moat. The playground OFF the island recently is pretty fun, too. FREE.
100+ Ideas for Kids Indoor Play in Orange County
In case the weather isn't so great, there are tons of ideas packed into this post for where to play indoors.
Best Mountains for Snow Play Near LA & OC
There are lots of lists out there, but this one from KidsGuide has been my go-to list for years. Just know that LOTS of families might have the same idea as you! So this is may be the most potential for crowds on this whole Winter Break list.
Go to the OC Zoo in Irvine Regional Park to see rehabilitated local wildlife
The zoo is such a deal at $2 per person. Bonus if you already have an OCParks.com pass and don't have to pay for parking. While there, you can take pony rides, rent a surrey bike, go for a nature hike or play on one of the many playgrounds dotted throughout the park. Bring a picnic and stay a while.
Ride your bikes on the Bolsa Chica State Beach Bike Path
Take a bike ride on a flat path near the ocean and then go over to the wetlands to wander the trails and visit the Interpretive Center there. $15 day use parking at the State Beach. You can try to check out a pass at your local library through the CA State Library Parks Pass program.
You can't bike ride at the wetlands, but you can park your bikes and go for a hike. I have 2 blog posts about the Wetlands which basically navigate you through both entrances:
Choose one of 5 family friendly hikes in Orange County
If you like this, then you should subscribe to my OC Tiny Hikes newsletter! It comes out once a week with some do-able nature connections and play trip ideas with your kids.
These are my favorite starter hikes for families. You can either treat them as hikes and walk for miles -- or you can take it slow and make it a nature walk going only part of the distance.
Experience the definition of "unstructured play" at Irvine Adventure Playground
This is such a unique play experience and we are so lucky to have an adventure playground like this in Orange County. There are only a handful of adventure playgrounds in the U.S. and we have 3 right here in OC (Huntington Beach only open during summer, Yorba Linda redesigned with priority visits for residents of Yorba Linda). There is also a famous one in Berkeley in Northern California. Bring a change of clothes because the kids are meant to get messy and maybe even muddy here.
Tour all the play places for train lovers
Where are my train kids? I had one who had at least a year of train obsession. Luckily, there is no shortage of places to go for kids who love trains!
Discover accessible playgrounds in Orange County
Accessible playgrounds tend to be favorites for all abilities and ages! They often make it to the top of most popular parks lists. There's also a link inside this post to accessible parks in LA from LA Parks.
Sit by the stream during a visit to Turtle Rock Nature Center and Community Park
Turtle Rock Community Park has a lovely little stream running nearby the playground, but also throughout the nature center. It is fun to just sit and watch the ducks or hear the water bubbling over the rocks.
Visit a free nature center -- and make a donation while you're there
An important note about Nature Center hours of operation! Save yourself time by calling ahead to make sure the hours listed are actually the hours for the day you are visiting. Some locations have private events in these spaces OR many of these centers listed have hours that are 100% contingent on volunteers to staff the location, so they can change at the last minute!
I always like to have a Plan B before I go and I tried to list what's nearby under the nature centers below so you WILL have that as an alternative.
Please be aware that you should always check official sources before you go!
Fall in love with a garden
All my favorites are in this post and also ones that are a little further afield, but worth the trip. Some are free, some charge an entrance. Always look at the membership options because sometimes there are reciprocal admissions that either get you into other gardens or get you in at a discount!
Take a trip to a Southern California aquarium or touch tank
This is a simple list of possibilities in Southern California. Which ones have you been to? Where are you going to go exploring on Winter Break?
Bundle up and go to a beach playground when no one is at the beach
You might think of these at summer destinations, but they are so much more fun during the winter! You don't have to compete as much for space and it just hits different in the winter. Bundle up the kids in mittens and puffy jackets since it will be a bit more breezy at the beach which will add to the chill. Or maybe you'll luck out and it will be one of those unusually warm winter days?
Another option is just to wonder at winter surf and sand play minus the playgrounds.
And there’s always rainy day activities for at home, cooking with the kids, and giving them your FULL attention! I’m wishing you the best for the holidays and hoping for an awesome 2024!
