Play Ideas Gone Wrong

I love to inspire play in my household.  What can we make out of pipe cleaners?  Puppets show anyone?  How about if we make a tea party out of play-doh?  I usually have plenty of ideas to entertain my children.

Of course, some of my most creative play ideas have not been as successful.  Like the time I put a loaded bubble wand in front of the air vent in my car.  With the air blasting through the vent my car quickly filled up with bubbles.  My daughter was completely entertained during our car ride home.  My husband on the other hand…well, he was not so happy with the sticky mess the bubbles left in the car interior.  Oops!

With laughter in my heart, I am happy to share with you one of my recent play ideas that definitely went wrong.

Basic Play Idea

  1. Have my daughter use her camera to take pictures of her Barbie Dolls.
  2. Print pictures out and paste them into an empty journal.
  3. Have my daughter write a story to go along with the pictures.

Fabulous idea right? Take a look at some of the pictures that came back.

Note to Mattel: Can you please make appropriate clothes for Barbie and her friends?

Well, hello, Mr. Ken!  Fancy meeting you in my closet looking so suave in your track suit!

Really?  Barbie on the potty?

Yes, Barbie needs heels and a short skirt to check on her baby.

I quickly realized that these photos would not make an appropriate story line.  Instead of printing out the pictures, I decided to just get on the floor and play Barbies with my daughter.  At least we were able to spend quality time together.  As for the Barbie pictures, I now have them on my computer desktop in a file labeled “LOL.” And trust me, there are plenty of other pictures in that file that showcase how often my play ideas go wrong!

Dara, That was hysterical! Thanks for the laugh. I completely agree with you on the clothes. The bubble wand in front of the vent was clever too. Chris would feel the same way John did...

Dara, I am laughing with you, not at you. I keep looking for some 'nice' Barbie clothes but it seems like even the pediatrician Barbie is dressed for a night on the town!
