I started our Nature Play Club almost a year ago and I have to say it’s the highlight of my month. I’ve participated in Dinner Clubs and Book Clubs, but there’s nothing like getting outdoors with a group of families to explore local nature. I just finished updating all our outings (except February) — so go have a look at what you can do in Orange County. Steal our ideas! Follow our lead!

Start Your Own Family Nature Club!
- Do you have a group of friends who you’d like to see more?
- Do you talk to the same group of parents while you are in the waiting room for dance or martial arts?
- Are you already part of a group with a desire to do more outdoor activities?
- Are you a homeschooling family that would like to adventure with other families?
We’ve made a commitment to get out once a month with the same group of 3-4 other families. It’s great for the dads to meet other dads, too. Mostly, it’s a time to connect with our kids outdoors and let them lead the way. Sometimes grandparents or other friends join us. It’s a great way to see things from a different perspective.
You can use one or all of these resources to start your planning! Let me know if you need a mentor and I’d be happy to tag along on your first outing.
- Grab a toolkit and gather info on the Children and Nature Network website
- If you’re in the LA area, Debi from GoExploreNature.com runs an open family nature club
- Kari of Active Kids Club in Canada has a whole network of outdoor playgroups and tools to get you started
