The Coolest Kids Around

The Coolest Kids Around

You will watch this video and think it’s one of the coolest thing you’ve seen in a while.

But while you are watching, I want you to think about WHY this is awesome.

  • I love it because of the no-limits imagination of the kids.
  • I love it because they didn’t follow any rules.
  • Of course, I love the artistry of the filming and the surf music that goes along with the whole presentation.
  • I love that it’s pure Orange County and pure California.
  • I love it because surfing connects kids with nature.
  • I love it because it reminds me of my childhood and how my parents allowed us to do stuff that kids are generally not allowed to do today.
  • The kicker comes toward the end when you realize NOW is the time to give your kids freedom to play outdoors and be creative. That NOW is the time to loosen the reins . . .

I asked the Director, Cyrus Sutton (korduroy.tv), if he had anything to share with our readers. He said:

“I would just say the beach and streets are free, you don’t have to wear the coolest clothes or have the best skateboard or surfboard to be rad. These kids in the video are having fun not caring about what anybody thinks about it. That’s why they are coolest kids around in my book.”

Thanks to korduroy.tv for permission to share this video on our site. Watch another short and entertaining video on what korduroy.tv is all about: spreading digital aloha and diy surfing. I’m an instant fan!

Just wanted to thank you for the kind words regarding how this all came about. My kids are great and Tarp Surfing is a total blast! It helped me through cancer making it possible to get stand up dry barrels when I was too sick to go surf. Now I am back surfing everyday with my kids. Thanks again!!

You do realize Michele, as soon as I share this video with Sam who is a huge skateboard fan, I'll have to go buy a 50ft tarp.

Thanks for sharing-so much fun!!!!!

I love this post. It brings me back to childhood experiments that always led to so much fun. The quote “I would just say the beach and streets are free" is such an important reminder to us adult worriers. Children are much more likely to see the opportunities for fun in their neighborhood through exploration and imagination and the assumption that they are free to be.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Beth. I love your point that kids are "more likely to see opportunities for fun" than anything else. I remember seeking out fun stuff when I was little. I never had a mind to get into trouble.
